Legality and Status

  • Federal Law: The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) previously classified some FRTs as machineguns. However, a recent settlement in May 2025 between the U.S. government and a major manufacturer, Rare Breed Triggers, resolved federal litigation, essentially allowing the sale and possession of specific FRTs for AR-15s and certain other platforms under federal law. The U.S. government agreed not to pursue enforcement actions against those who possess eligible FRTs.
  • State Law: The federal settlement does not override state-level prohibitions. FRTs remain illegal in some states, such as California and New York, that have their own laws banning these devices.
  • Key Distinction: The legal argument in favor of FRTs is that each shot, while rapid, still involves a separate “function” or “pull” of the trigger, even if the shooter is simply maintaining constant rearward pressure, which technically makes the firearm semi-automatic.

FRT 15 Trigger 3 Position Upgrade

Our FRT 15 Triggers are a 3 Position Forced Reset Trigger design that allows for three distinct selector positions, each giving the shooter a different function or firing mode.

1. SAFE

The trigger cannot be pulled. This position blocks the fire-control group for complete safety.

2. SEMI (Standard Fire)

The rifle fires one round per trigger pull like a normal AR-15 trigger.

3. FORCED RESET / ENHANCED MODE

This is the special position. When fired, the trigger automatically pushes your finger forward to reset extremely fast, allowing much quicker follow-up shots while still requiring one pull per shot.
It’s not full auto — it’s just a mechanical system that speeds up the trigger reset.
